Ps Joshua Newington

Associate Lecturer in Ministry; Coordinator of Professional Practice

I am a theological researcher and educator with a focus on time, pneumatology, and interdisciplinary method. My current work explores temporality in the thought of Giorgio Agamben and the apostle Paul, interpreted through the pneumatological lens of Amos Yong's theology. I am interested in how time shapes theological imagination, ethics, and ecclesial life.

My work draws from biblical studies, philosophy, and Pentecostal/charismatic theology to construct integrative frameworks for contemporary theology. I have experience adapting complex theological ideas for educational and church-based contexts and remain committed to theology that serves the life and mission of the church.

I am an ordained Australian Christian Churches minister with more than a decade of pastoral experience.

Current Research

My research interests lie at the intersection of theology, sociology, and critical theory, with a particular focus on the formation of identity, the role of the church in late modern societies, and the critique of secular social imaginaries. I am especially interested in exploring how theological method can be brought into dialogue with continental philosophy (particularly Giorgio Agamben) and classical sociological theory to interpret and challenge contemporary cultural, political, and religious structures.

My work engages with questions of temporality, power, and disciplinary formation, particularly in light of media and technology, and considers how the Christian tradition might contribute to a more humane and hopeful public discourse. I am also interested in pedagogy, especially in designing learning experiences that enable students to critically reflect on their own identity formation and social location within both church and society.
