Title of Project Reading and Preaching the Bible in Ghana: A Study of Ghanaian Pentecostal Hermeneutics
Course of Study Doctor of Philosophy
Language of Instruction English
Abstract

This study examines how. Ghanaian Pentecostal preachers read and preach the Bible. Although Pentecostalism worldwide has. attracted significant scholarly attention, there remains a notable gap in empirical research on the actual interpretive practices of Pentecostal preachers in. African contexts. Drawing from the theoretical insights of a number of western and African Pentecostal scholars, this study will analyze. the hermeneutical approach of Pentecostal preachers in Ghana. Employing a quantitative approach, the study will utilize survey questionnaire to generate data from selected preachers across Classical and Neo-Pentecostal (Charismatic) churches in Ghana. The analysis will focus on how Ghanaian Pentecostal preachers interpret biblical texts, using 1 Corinthians 2:1–5 and Psalm 24:7-8 as case study.[1] The research aims to better understand, through empirical research, how Ghanaian Pentecostal preachers read and interpret scripture. More broadly, the research will contribute to the global Pentecostal discourse.

[1] Although the texts themselves within the themes are an arbitrary choice, I believe the texts chosen for analysis will provide an appropriate way of examining the Pentecostal concern for literalism within Pentecostal ecclesiastical practice with the academic concern for critical reading.
