The ancient notion of koinonia is used in the book of Acts to describe the socialisation of the early Spirit-filled church. Whilst much scholarly attention and critique has been given to the evidence of the Spirit in/on the believer from a "pentecostal perspective" since the mid-twentieth century, this thesis endeavours to focus attention on the evidence of the Spirit in koinonia. By asking the question, "what are the associated variables conducive of koinonia in the early church?", the purpose of this thesis is to then ask the question, "how does the ancient notion of koinonia inform a modern pentecostal church?" By exploring social capital, its associated variables and the possibility of producing tools by which social capital is measured, the ancient notion of koinonia could well be experienced in modern churches and a contributing factor to the growth of the church.
